The precocious Matilda is a little bit naughty and a whole lot delightful in the Empress Theatre’s spring production of Matilda The Musical!
Inspired by the imagination of Roald Dahl, the Tony Award-winning show is the Empress Theatre Society’s seventh annual musical theatre production, running May 30 and 31, June 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Matilda The Musical is the story of a clever little girl who, despite her cruel parents and terrifying school principal, dreams of changing her destiny. Armed with an astonishing wit and extraordinary psychokinetic powers, Matilda fights back against her parents and enlists her kind teacher and fellow classmates to team up against their school headmistress.
Matilda is packed with high-energy, cheeky, ingenious tunes including “Naughty”, “Quiet” and “Revolting Children.” The musical has won 47 international awards, including five Tonys and seven Laurence Olivier Awards.
The 1996 movie version focuses on Matilda’s ability to move things with her mind. “This also happens in the play, but is more of a climactic moment,” explains Chelsey. “We are using shadows and some technical tricks to simulate Matilda’s powers.”
The 17 children and 13 adult cast members come from Pincher Creek, Claresholm, Lethbridge, and Fort Macleod. “It has been fun to see people from a variety of towns, ages, backgrounds, and theatre experience come together to create this community experience,” she says. “Working with kids is great because they have so many ideas and can’t wait to share them.”
Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of a special little girl with a remarkable imagination.
The annual musical production is a fundraiser for the Empress. Performances of this year’s family-friendly show begin at 7 p.m., with a matinée performance on Saturday, June 1 at 1 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for children and seniors, available at MacleodEmpress.com or by calling 403-553-4404 (toll-free at 1-800-540-9229).
