The Empress Theatre is pleased to present the Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society’s production of The Comedy of Errors, one of the Bard’s most absurdly ridiculous and shortest comedies, on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
The Comedy of Errors features two sets of identical twins, separated soon after birth in a dreadful shipwreck. Each ‘Dromio’ twin from one set is servant to one of the other ‘Antipholus’ twins, and all four end up in the same town on the same day. More and more townspeople are sucked into a vortex of mistaken identity, including a bewildered wife who believes her husband has a split personality. Chaos ensues as the inhabitants continually confuse the brothers with their twins, while both sets of twins try to navigate a world that seems to have gone mad.
The Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society’s director, renowned playwright Ron Chambers, has re-located Shakespeare’s play to a cowboy town in 1890s Southern Alberta, and has ‘cowboy-ified’ some of the dialogue. This Comedy of Errors is fast-paced, farcical and fun, and is suitable for all ages.
This is the sixth season for Lethbridge Shakespeare Performance Society, a non-profit group whose cast and creative team are drawn from both community theatre and from the University of Lethbridge’s theatre department. They perform throughout the summer in Lethbridge’s Galt Gardens.
